“Fred Koch is a world class builder who is trying to transform the South Bay into the nation’s first carbon-neutral region. I just met with Fred Koch the other day for a cup of java. We were at a local hang-out on the Pacific Coast Highway, Patrick’s Roadhouse, and talking about one of the most important areas of green living: our homes.” David Steinman – Owner, Green Patriot Radio

Builders Zero In on New Goal Of Energy – Neutral Housing. The green building movement is targeting a goal once thought virtually unattainable: zero net energy use. While the trend is nascent, dozens of “net zero” and “near net zero” developments – projects designed to use only about as much power from the public grid as they can save or produce on their own – have sprung up across the U.S. over the past five years.

As a green builder in southern California with LEED and Build it Green credentials, I continuously challenge myself to save my clients money while saving the environment.
My company, KOCH Builders, is unique because our approach is to do as much as we can with the least. This generally begins with dismantling rather than demolishing the structure we’re greening! We typically reuse the wood—twice. The first use is for forming concrete, and after we clean forms, we use it for framing blocking, studs or floor/ceiling joists. The key to this is to use Duogard water-based form-release agent on the surface of the wood.
